AUT trying to encourage more Māori into nursing

AUT University in Auckland is trying to encourage more Māori to take up nursing.

Dr Anita Bamford-Wade, AUT Nursing faculty joint head says Māori have disproportionate health needs and Māori healthcare across the board would improve if there were more Māori health professionals.

AUT is wanting to increase the number of Māori entering nursing training and recognise that support for Māori students is required to see them through to graduation.

Dr Bamford-Wade said that Māori women are often discouraged from training as nurses because they start their families younger and they often rule out the possiblity of study while raising their families.
