Māori news stories for the week ending 7 June 2013

  • Last Thursday the Environment Court awarded legal costs of $65,000 in favour of Ngāti Pikiao and $50,000 in favour of Ngāti Makino against the Rotorua District Council. This matter was regarding costs incurred when Ngāti Pikiao and Ngāti Makino appealed the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s decision to grant the Rotorua District Council consent to build a wastewater treatment plant at Lake Rotoma.
  • On Wednesday a book launch was held for He Papakupu Reo Ture: A Dictionary of Māori Legal Terms, published by Lexis Nexis.

  • Robert Mingi Elliott, for services to Māori and mental health services.
  • Morvin Te Anatipa Simon, for services to Māori.

Queen’s Service Order (QSO)

  • Alice Te Awa Hudson, for services to Māori and the community.

Queen’s Service Medal (QSM)

  • Mihi Lydia Angell, for services to Māori and the community.
  • Trevor Hapi Howse, for services to Māori and conservation.
  • John Motunau Katene Kopa, for services to Māori.
  • Lynette Te Manawa Roa, for services to the community.
  • Ani Kanara Rolfe, for services to senior citizens and community.
