Parliamentary Matters

  • On Tuesday Te Pire mō Ō-Rākau, Te Pae o Maumahara / Ō-Rākau Remembrance Bill was read for a first time. This bill allows for the vesting of land in Maniapoto, Raukawa, and Waikato ancestors in acknowledgement of the battle of Ō-Rakau.

  • In April the Korowai o Wainuiārua Claims Settlement Bill was read for a first time. The redress package includes $21.7 million in financial and commercial redress, $6.8 million in cultural funding, the return of 19 sites of cultural significance, plus the establishment a predator proof ecosanctuary at Pōkākā.  Te Korowai o Wainuiārua represent Tamahaki, Tamakana and Uenuku iwi groups in the Whanganui region.

  • In April the Ngāti Paoa Claims Settlement Bill was read for a second time. This settlement includes financial and commercial redress of $23.5 million and the return of 14 properties of significance to the iwi.
