Appointments and Awards – 21 July 2017 (edition 24/2017)

  • Che Wilson (Ngāti Rangi) has been appointed as a member of a Tribunal to consider whether Waikoropupū Springs should be subject to the Water Conservation Order. (An application for the order was filed by Ngāti Tama and Andrew Yuill, to ensure greater protection of the water.)
  • Hemi Dale has been appointed to Te Mātāwai, to represent urban Māori. Mr Dale replaces Willie Jackson who vacated the position to join the Labour Party list.
  • Matariki Awards are being held tonight at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, to recognise Māori excellence in a variety of fields.

Appointments and Awards – 19 May 2017 (edition 16/2017)

  • The Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Maggie Barry, has appointed Kim Ngārimu (and others) to the Board of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. She also appointed  Chris Cochran, Rebecca (Liz) Mellish and Paul White to the Māori Heritage Council.  (The Māori Heritage Council’s responsibilities include listing Māori sacred sites and historic places of particular interest to Māori.)

Appointments and Awards – 29 Jan 2016 (1/2016)

 

  • Vanessa Clark and Brian Morris have been appointed to the board of Te Māngai Pāho.  Doug Hauraki and Professor Rawinia Higgins have also been reappointed to the board for further three-year terms.
  • The following New Zealand Honours and Queen’s Service awards were conferred to Māori, or people giving services to Māori, on 31 December 2015.[1]

Appointments and awards; edition 22/2014 (27 June 2014)

  • Last Thursday it was announced that Tania Simpson (Tainui, Ngāi Tahu, Ngāpuhi) has been appointed to the board of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.
  • Last Friday the Government appointed Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith to its Māori Economic Development Advisory Board.
  • On Wednesday the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Chris Finlayson, announced eight members have been appointed to the Māori Heritage Council.  By way of background, in May new legislation was introduced that disestablished the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, and replaced it with the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.  The new Act contains provision for a Māori Heritage Council to advise the board of the new entity.  (This is in addition to Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga having three board members with expert knowledge of te ao Māori.)

    Functions of the Māori Heritage Council include; (i) ensuring the protection of heritage places and areas meet the needs of Māori; (ii) assisting  Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga to develop bicultural perspectives; (iii) assisting whānau, hapū and iwi in the preservation and management of their heritage resources; (iv) advising on recommendations relating to archaeological sites relevant to Māori; (v) making decisions about the registration/entries on the heritage list / rārangi kōrero of wāhi tapu, wāhi tapu areas, wāhi tupuna; and (vi) advocating for the interests of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga in aspects of its work that relates to Māori.  The incoming Council members are:
