Functions of the Māori Heritage Council include; (i) ensuring the protection of heritage places and areas meet the needs of Māori; (ii) assisting Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga to develop bicultural perspectives; (iii) assisting whānau, hapū and iwi in the preservation and management of their heritage resources; (iv) advising on recommendations relating to archaeological sites relevant to Māori; (v) making decisions about the registration/entries on the heritage list / rārangi kōrero of wāhi tapu, wāhi tapu areas, wāhi tupuna; and (vi) advocating for the interests of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga in aspects of its work that relates to Māori.
